After Tragic Crash, Kedarnath Helicopter Services Resume June 17

Kedarnath, Uttarakhand — In a significant move following last week’s tragic helicopter crash, the Uttarakhand government has announced the resumption of helicopter services to Kedarnath from June 17, 2025. The operations were temporarily suspended to allow for a thorough investigation and safety review.

Background: Crash That Claimed Lives

On June 11, a private helicopter en route to the Kedarnath shrine crashed under adverse weather conditions, resulting in the deaths of six passengers and one pilot. The incident occurred near Garudchatti, a mountainous region known for turbulent wind patterns and unpredictable visibility.

Preliminary findings from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) cited sudden weather deterioration and low visibility as contributing factors. A technical failure has not been ruled out and is still under investigation.

Temporary Suspension & Safety Audit

Following the crash, all helicopter operations to and from the Kedarnath helipad were halted immediately. Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), in collaboration with DGCA, conducted a comprehensive safety audit of all helipads, aircraft, and operating agencies involved in the Kedarnath Yatra.

The government also reviewed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for weather assessment, air traffic control, and emergency response systems.

Resumption With Enhanced Safety Protocols

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced that helicopter services will resume from Monday, June 17, but with strict new guidelines in place. These include:

  • Real-time weather monitoring systems at key helipads
  • Mandatory rest periods for pilots after every sortie
  • Increased frequency of aircraft inspections
  • Deployment of additional ground staff for passenger briefing and assistance
  • Enhanced coordination with India Meteorological Department (IMD)

Dhami stated, “Pilgrim safety is our topmost priority. We are ensuring that not only the services resume but also that every precaution is taken.”

Pilgrim Influx Continues Despite Tragedy

Despite the recent tragedy, the Chardham Yatra, particularly Kedarnath, continues to see high footfall. Over 6 lakh pilgrims have already visited the shrine this season. Many are opting for helicopter services due to the physically demanding 16-km trek from Gaurikund.

The resumed services are expected to ease congestion and provide relief to elderly and differently-abled pilgrims.

Heli Operators Under Scrutiny

The state has licensed nine helicopter operators for the Kedarnath route, including prominent private aviation companies. All are now required to submit detailed reports on pilot training, aircraft condition, and recent maintenance activities. Future permissions may be contingent upon adherence to the revised safety norms.

The aviation department is also planning to install Black Box-like trackers on all choppers flying to hill shrines to monitor their route, altitude, and speed in real-time.

Public Reactions and Safety Concerns

Families of the deceased have called for a judicial probe into the crash. Several religious groups and travel associations have welcomed the decision to resume operations, citing economic and logistical challenges for the local economy during prolonged suspensions.

Safety experts, however, urge continuous monitoring and stress the importance of weather-based flight decisions rather than religious deadlines or pressure from pilgrims.

Conclusion

The tragic crash has cast a shadow over the 2025 Kedarnath Yatra, but Uttarakhand’s swift response and recommitment to safety offer reassurance. As services resume on June 17, pilgrims are encouraged to follow all safety instructions, respect weather advisories, and prioritize safety over speed.
