Lucknow, July 7, 2025 — Former four-term Member of Parliament from Gonda and veteran Uttar Pradesh politician Kunwar Anand Singh, affectionately known as the “UP Tiger,” passed away last night in Lucknow. He was 87.(https://newsium.in/)
According to family sources, Singh’s health deteriorated suddenly at his residence, prompting an emergency hospital visit, where he breathed his last on Saturday night.
Born on January 4, 1939, into the royal Mankapur family, he pursued a BSc in Agriculture from Allahabad’s Agriculture Institute after schooling at Lucknow’s Colvin Taluqedar College. He managed the ancestral estate before entering politics following his father’s death.
Singh won multiple assembly seats in 1964, 1967, and 1969. He served as MP from Gonda in 1971, 1980, 1984, and 1989—initially on Congress’s strength, and later joined Samajwadi Party—before losing his seat in the 1990s. In 2012, he returned to politics, becoming Gaura MLA and serving as Agriculture Minister under CM Akhilesh Yadav.
Widely revered as the “UP Tiger,” Singh wielded significant influence in eastern UP, especially in Gonda, where nominations often bore his seal of approval.
Singh is survived by his wife, Veena Singh, three daughters, and son Kirti Vardhan Singh, the current Member of Parliament for Gonda and Minister of State for External Affairs and Environment. Political leaders, including SP chief Akhilesh Yadav, have extended condolences on his passing.
His death marks the end of a significant political epoch in Uttar Pradesh, closing a chapter defined by dynasty, diplomacy, and enduring regional influence.
